Write a commentNewry, Mourne and Down Councillor, Pete Byrne has thanked charity Age Sector Platform for the opportunity to discuss bread and butter issues at the Newry Mourne and Down Pensioners Parliament earlier this month.
Byrne said, ‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank Age Sector Platform for inviting me to speak on the Councillors Panel at this years meeting of the Newry Mourne and Down Pnsioners Parliament. I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion and welcome the opportunity to engage in some of the bread and butter issues affecting delegates present on the day.’
‘One of the most prominent issues coming from the floor was access to services for the elderly. Some pointed to difficulties accessing leisure facilities and in rural communities in particular, access to transport was a huge concern. These are issues which were raised with me after the panel discussion and I’m more than happy to follow up on at Council level.’
‘It was recorded that 61% of delegates present on the day believed that the current political deadlock at Stormont is impacting negatively on the elderly in our community. This is a frustration I picked up with those I engaged with and I would like to assure members of the Parliament that your local Council can play a vital role in voicing your concerns in the absence of a Stormont Assembly.’
