The Carlingford Lough Ferry will not be operating on any dates in 2026, operators have announced.
The scenic ferry that travelled between Greenore and Greencastle made its first trip on the 21 July 2017 but it hasn't operated since it stopped for the winter in September 2025.
The route proved popular among tourists and locals alike with the draw of the beautiful scenery of Carlingford Lough. One of the highlights on the ferry were the Carlingford Lough sunset Cruises over the summer with music on board.
The announcement comes at a time when work is progressing on the Narrow Water Bridge link between Omeath and Warrenpoint, which will give motorists another cross border travelling option when it opens in 2028 and it is unclear if or when the ferry route will return.
The ferry formed an important part of the tourism package of counties Louth and Down and local tourism provider On Yer Bike based at Carlingford commented in a Facebook post "No more hopping over to Greencastle and Cranfield Beach, no more ‘Le Tour du Lough’ or Carlingford Lough Loop Sportive organised by @26_extreme. It’s sad because it was such a great service and run extremely well. Thanks for the years you gave us @carlingfordloughferry and fingers crossed for future years"
