Over 165 children from Carrickcruppen took part in the recent two week summer camp. The event was facilitated by Newry and Mourne District Council in partnership with local clubs, groups and community associations as well as national governing bodies and Active Community Coaches.
Mayor Cllr Mickey Ruane was delighted to come along and support the group. He said “It is fantastic to see all these children enjoying sport and learning new skills, the club organisers are to be congratulated and the Council are happy to support this scheme that provides structured and enjoyable activity at an affordable rate for children of all abilities”.
The Council have supported 53 courses, in 21 sports and an expected 5000 children and young people will attend the coaching schemes from Annalong, Rostrevor and Newry to Camlough, Crossmaglen and Newtownhamilton. New exciting additions this year are Mountain Biking and Curragh Camps! The mountain biking courses are being taken by Glynn O’Brien who is the co-ordinator for the mountain biking event as part of the upcoming World Police & Fire Games.
The Sports Camps are open to young people from Newry and Mourne and include Angling, Basketball, Camogie, Curragh Boating, Gaelic Football, Golf, Hockey, Hurling, Mountain Biking, Netball, Outdoor Education, Soccer, Street Dance Drama, Dedicated Special Needs Summer Scheme, Special Needs Kayaking and Tennis.
All schemes are for boys and girls of all abilities and are set at affordable rates.
Mr Hugh Murphy, Chairperson of the Newry and Mourne District Council Sports Development Committee, took this opportunity to wish all who take part in the programme an enjoyable and active summer.
