Write a commentKeen or not so keen gardeners can take advantage of some free compost from Newry, Mourne and Down Council as part of Compost Awareness Week, which runs from from Monday 8 to Monday 15 May 2017.
Green fingered residents can collect one bag of compost at the ‘giveaway’ events on Thursday 11 May until Saturday 13 May at all of the Household Recycling Centres (HRC’s) in the District.
The distribution of the compost is on a first come-first served basis, so get there early to avoid disappointment.
Supplied by Natural World Products, the compost is made from biodegradable waste collected from Newry, Mourne and Down households. Last year residents diverted 12,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste from landfill by recycling in the brown bin scheme and taking their garden waste to the HRC’s.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “Due to food waste regulations, food waste must now be recycled in the brown bin and cannot be placed into the black bin. We hope that this giveaway will recognize and reward the efforts residents make to use their bins correctly.”
Compost Awareness Week aims to promote the benefits of home composting and the great results achieved by using composts containing recycled material.
