Next Wednesday 8 May, the Chairman of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Cllr Mark Murnin is set to embark on a three day  66 mile walk across the District to raise funds for his 3 chosen charities; NI Air Ambulance; Newry Gateway and Glebe House.

The Chairman’s Walk is a new initiative by Councillor Murnin as his year in office nears closure and he will be joined across three days by local schools, charity representatives and the President of Newry Chamber of Commerce Paul Convery.

Chairman Murnin said: “I wanted to do something active, which would showcase the beauty of the region that I am proud to live in. I am delighted to be taking on this Charity Walk challenge and to use this unique opportunity to raise money for these important local charities.”

Over 250 school children from schools including Our Lady’s Grammar, Newry, St Mary’s Primary School, Newcastle and Christ the King, Ballynahinch among others, are joining the 3mile/£3 supporter walks and there is still time for other schools or groups to get involved as on the day registration is available.

Join the Walk

The route – from Slieve Gullion to Delamont - has 5 supporter opportunities to walk 3 miles for £3 donation to the local charities.

You can join Chairman at 10am Slieve Gullion on the 8th of May;

OR 2pm Albert Basin on the afternoon of the 8th May (3 miles)

10am Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor on the 9th May (3 miles).in Newcastle, 10am, 10th May 2019 (3 miles)

You can also join the Chairman 10 May at Delamont Park at 5pm for the Final Lap and enjoy the entertainment at the finish line.

Party in the Park.

The Party in the Park is a free event from 5pm in Delamont Park with face painting, balloon modelling, live music, arts & crafts and an Artisan Marketplace. There is no formal entry fee, but voluntary donations to the 3 charities can be made at the entrance gate.

The Charities

Gateway Club

The Gateway Club recognises the continuing role of people with learning disabilities in the community. The club help disabled people to become aware of the benefits of participating in an active lifestyle. They have lots of fun filled activities such as drama, art, music and sports facilitated by experienced staff and volunteers.

Air Ambulance NI

Air Ambulance Northern Ireland’s operational helicopter carries a crew comprising of pilot, doctor, and paramedic, 365 days of the year operating for twelve hours every day.  They attend some of the most traumatic medical incidents across the province and are dedicated to delivering the very best possible pre- hospital care, both at the scene and whilst transferring the patient to the most appropriate hospital for their specific injuries. What is not widely known is that AANI is a charity.  Each day costs in the region of £5,500 and £2m is needed each year to keep the air ambulance service operational.  They rely entirely on support from the public and local businesses.

Glebe House

Harmony Community Trust is a cross community organisation that promotes community relations and social inclusion.  Its main base is a sixteen-acre wildlife area at Kilclief, close to the shores of Strangford Lough, from which it delivers community relations, social inclusion and respite programmes on a year round basis.  They strive to enable all people to explore divisive barriers and to develop the self-confidence to build mutual respect, tolerance and trust through positive shared experiences.
