Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has introduced a new Planning Validation Checklist designed to improve the quality of planning applications submitted across the district. The checklist will come into effect from Monday, 1 June 2026, following its formal adoption by the Council's Planning Committee.
The checklist was developed after consultation with the public and interested parties, and sets out clearly what information and supporting documents must be included when submitting a planning application. The aim is to ensure applications are valid from the point of receipt, reducing the risk of avoidable delays in processing.
Council Chairperson Councillor Philip Campbell, a former member of the Planning Committee, commented on the move: "This Council continues to lead the way in the number of planning applications received each year. It is therefore extremely important that we improve the efficiency of how planning applications are received and processed. The Validation Checklist will enable us to do that."
To support applicants further, the Planning Department has produced accompanying guidance notes which clarify exactly what information should be submitted alongside a planning application.
All relevant documents, including the Validation Checklist and guidance notes, are available to view on the Council's planning pages at www.newrymournedown.org/planning
