Sports Club and Community Development presentation to Damolly FC

Last week at Newry City Showgrounds before the Irish Premier League match versus Dungannon Swifts representatives from Damolly United FC, were presented with sports equipment as part of their ongoing VRQ (vocational related qualification) in Sports Club and Community Development.

The level 1 award due to be completed in April 2011 is recognised on the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) has been funded through the Dept Foreign Affairs, Dublin to promote greater community cohesion and addressing sectarianism.

Paul McKenna,  Chairman Newry City FC, Barbara Knox, Newry Sports Partnership CIC and Gareth McKnight, Damolly United FCThe presentation of the equipment made by Paul McKenna, Chairman of Newry City FC, is to recognise a milestone of the course and equip the participants to practice their learning in the community by delivering coaching sessions and activities to promote greater participation from different sections of their community. Mr McKenna stated, “ Newry City Community Trust and all of its partners are committed to building relationships with our community and other football clubs in various ways. This groundbreaking course demonstrates that this Club is more than just friendship but making tangible and changeable differences in our community.”

The course comprises of units of work from Sports participation, planning and reviewing activities to encouraging community involvement and enterprise in a community setting.

This opportunity has come through the Newry Sports Partnership CIC and Newry City Community Trust and its status of being a Approved Assessment Centre for the awarding body Open College Network NI (OCNNI) . Barbara Knox from Newry Sports Partnership said “We are delighted to see such a community sports group building relationships within the area, and with Newry City Football Club. This programme endorses our aims to promote sports development through community cohesion .”

The role of the centre is to promote lifelong learning and to offer accredited courses and units to promote community sport and performance sport in our region.

Damolly United FC has seen over recent months a surge in participation numbers and a greater efficiency in running the club affairs. The Club is demonstrating its keenness and commitment to providing a safe, inclusive and knowledgeable sports environment.
