Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s strategy, policy and resources committee has accepted a Department for Infrastructure 50% match funding offer.
The cash flow of £180k from each government body will be translated into feasibility and design reports for three greenway projects across the district.
Newry councillor Cathal King said: “The greenway projects are a fantastic asset for the people of this district with the section of Newry to Omeath in particular has been hugely successful.
“It is clearly valued by local people and I do hear that on a daily basis. So, it is a no-brainer to get behind and support.”
Newry already boasts a popular 12 mile crossborder greenway from the city’s Albert Basin along the Ship Canal to Carlingford village in Co Louth, which was finalised in September 2025 at a total cost of £4.45m.
The committee also noted the final EU letter of funding for the Carlingford greenway project, but discussions on this were held in confidential session away from public view, along with 12 other agenda items.
A report before the chamber showed DfI has accepted a business case for the new rural walkway projects which will include the existing Newry Canal Towpath to Poyntzpass, Downpatrick to Ardglass and Ballynahinch to Saintfield.
Rowallane councillor Tierna Howie added: “This is really exciting to see and for it to come to Rowallane as well alongside Downpatrick and Castlewellan.
“It is really encouraging to promote our green spaces and I look forward to the proposal as they go forward and I would encourage as much consultation as possible with local communities.”
Crotlieve councillor Declan McAteer said: “It literally is marvellous to see three different areas that will benefit from this.
“The greenways are such a tourism driver and of course for local use as well for active travel, but there are so many other opportunities that they provide.”
