The Department for Infrastructure is seeking public views on a proposed active travel scheme for the A2 Newry Road in Warrenpoint. The scheme would create a continuous cycling and walking link between the proposed Narrow Water Bridge and Warrenpoint town centre.
The department held an information event in Warrenpoint yesterday.
Members of the public have until 31 July 2026 to submit feedback. Comments can be submitted by email to activetravel@infrastructure-ni.gov.uk, or by post to DfI Active Travel, Marlborough House, Central Way, Craigavon, BT64 1AD.
The proposal comprises a segregated cycle track measuring 3.0 metres wide and a footway measuring 2.0 metres wide, separated from vehicular traffic by a kerbed buffer strip. The Department said this would enhance safety and comfort for both cyclists and pedestrians, while supporting improved connectivity and encouraging sustainable travel.
Two potential options are being put forward as part of the consultation. Option A would create an active travel corridor on the northeast side of the A2 Newry Road, on the golf course side, while Option B would create a corridor on the southwest side, on the Port side.
The Department said the scheme would bring benefits including improved connectivity for active travel, more environmentally friendly journeys, and the promotion of health and wellbeing. Further details on the proposals are available at infrastructure-ni.gov.uk/.
