Resurfacing scheme for Armagh Road due to start next weekend

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £318,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the A28 Customs Station Roundabout and A28 Carnbane Way in Newry is set to begin next Sunday 6 September 2026.  The works will see overnight road closures for almost two weeks.

The resurfacing will involve asphalt resurfacing of the Customs Station Roundabout and side roads adjacent to it, extending along Carnbane Way for 300 metres towards Fiveways roundabout. To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme, overnight road closures will be in place from Sunday 6 September to Friday 18 September 2026, between 8:00pm and 6:00am each night.

Minister Kimmins said the investment was substantial for the Newry area and would deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users. "The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Newry area." She added that she would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while the essential infrastructure work is carried out.

Two diversion routes will be signed during the closures. The first will direct traffic via Carnbane Way, Belfast Road, the Newry bypass, the bypass on-slip and dual carriageway southbound, the southbound off-slip road, Camlough Road, Craigmore Way, Armagh Road, and the bypass on-slip, dual carriageway and off-slip northbound. The second diversion route will run via Shepherds Way and Tandragee Road.

The Department explain that it has programmed the work and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience, though local access road users should expect some delays. Motorists are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions. Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works are expected to be substantially complete by Saturday 19 September 2026, with the Department keeping the public informed of any change.
