Jeffrey Donaldson has been sentenced today in Newry Courthouse to 15 years imprisonment for child sex abuse. The former DUP leader was in court to hear the sentence.
In September at Newry Donaldson was found guilty of rape, four counts of gross indecency and 13 counts of indecent assault against two women when they were children. The offences took place between 1985 and 2008.
Speaking after the sentencing a spokesperson for NSPCC Northern Ireland said: “For many years, Jeffrey Donaldson repeatedly sexually abused two girls, causing harm that has had a profound and lasting impact on their lives. In doing so, he also betrayed the trust placed in him as a public figure.
“Both women showed incredible courage in giving evidence, and we hope they can now begin to move forward in their lives knowing their abuser has been held accountable. Child sexual abuse can have a devastating impact on victims, and it is vital they receive the support they need.
The spokesperson said that the judgement showed that no matter how long ago the abuse took place, or who the perpetrator is, those who come forward will be listened to and can see justice served.
They continued "We can all play a part in keeping children safe. This means being prepared to ask difficult questions, recognising when something may be wrong and taking action when concerns arise. If something doesn’t seem right, it’s important that it is reported to those who can help protect a child."
