A three way partnership between the National Trust, Friends of Derrymore and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council was established several years ago to take forward the long term development of a range of projects within the Derrymore Estate.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said, “The establishment of the partnership has brought a keen focus to what is needed from within the estate for the greater benefit of the people and communities that surround it.”
Councillor Mulgrew continued, “It is great to see some of the projects which the partnership has identified moving forward. The work and dedication of the Friends of Derrymore has been admirable and it is a pleasure to be able to work with and support them.”
Derrymore House was built in the late 18th Century by Issac Corry, who represented Newry in the Irish House of Commons for 30 years.
It was donated to the National Trust in 1952, who set about conserving Derrymore House and introducing walking trails around the parkland for use by the general public.
Over the last year the estate has been the venue for a number of extremely successful events including historical talks, Halloween walks, Santa’s Grotto and several environmental projects.
