Going "Batty" in Bessbrook

For a completely different night out why not take a Bat walk round Bessbrook!

Forget the cinema, a meal at your favourite restaurant or an evening in front of the television. Newry and Mourne District Council biodiversity office is offering you a different way to spend your Friday night – a Bat Walk. 

The guided walk will start at the Bessbrook Community Centre Mill Rd on Friday 22nd August at 8pm, giving visitors the opportunity to track down our furry friends – bats which live around the ponds and woods of Bessbrook. 

Participants will be given an introduction to the mammals before venturing out and about to find the bats in their natural habitat, and learn how best to protect them. 

“ Bats are unique, amazing creatures” said Abby McSherry, biodiversity officer with the council “living close alongside us, but many people don’t realise they might be able to see bats in their own backyard” she continued.

A total of 9 species of bat currently live in Ireland, many either endangered or threatened by extinction. “Bessbrook and the Newry area is home to several bat species including the dramatic water-skimming Daubenton’s bat,” explains Robin Moffit from the Northern Ireland Bat Group who will be leading the evening. 

“The bat walk is a very popular event, which is suitable for the whole family. Visitors get the opportunity to use bat detectors and listen to the magical songs of the local bats. We encourage those taking part to bring a torch and flask with them, wear sensible shoes and be prepared for an evening of fun and adventure.”
