SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt has called on the Roads Minister Danny Kennedy to take urgent action to address road safety at the Ballyholland road in Newry.
Ms McKevitt said “I have again been contacted by motorists and residents of the Ballyholland road in Newry concerned about drivers speeding from the Windmill Road junction all the way through to the junction at Temple Hill Road. I have previously written to Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy about this stretch of road but until now the department has maintained that 'it doesn’t attract a sufficiently high priority’ for traffic calming measures.
“I have no doubt that the constant speeding, combined with poor visibility at junctions make an accident here almost inevitable. I have again written to the Minister asking him to review the situation as a matter of urgency and implement traffic calming measures before any lives are lost.
“I would also call on drivers to be aware of the dangers and slow down near these junctions. Road safety is an issue for us all and we must all take steps to reduce death on our roads.”
