It took nearly three years but at last the family of Mairie Rankin were in court yesterday to hear the Jury find her killer guilty of murdering the 81 year old in her Dublin Road home.
After the verdict a family member hoped that they could now spend their time trying to concentrate on remembering their mother's 81 years of life rather than looking back on her brutal death.
Mrs Rankin was found dead in the bedroom of her home early on Christmas morning 2008. She had been savagely beaten with a crucifix, clumps of her hair had been pulled out and she had sustained head injuries and broken ribs before being subjected to the "ultimate defilement of her body"
After a very complicated and unbelievable case 45 year old Pharmacist Karen Walsh, her next door neighbour at the time was convicted of the murder.
Sentencing will be carried out later.
