Soroptimist International Newry and Mourne host a major conference on the issue of Human Trafficking in November. Harrowing statistics reveal that thousands of women and girls are held against their will in sex trafficking locations in Ireland today -and this could be happening in your street!
To explore the true face of Trafficking in Ireland, Soroptimist International Newry and Mourne is hosting a Conference in the Canal Court Hotel on Thursday 3rd November. The event is supported by the Southern Partnership’s Challenge of Change project funded by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme.
Anna Lo MLA who has campaigned tirelessly on the issue of human trafficking will deliver the keynote address. Other eminent speakers include Detective Superintendant Philip Marshall, PSNI, Geraldine Rowley, Policy and Communications Officer RUHMA and also a representative from the NSPCC.
Conference delegates will include representatives from both the Voluntary and Statutory Sectors, Public Representatives, Women’s Groups, Ethnic Minority Groups, Churches, Schools and the Business Community.
Speaking at the Launch, President of Soroptimist International Newry and Mourne, Ann Kissane said: “The issue of Human Trafficking has been high on the Soroptimist Agenda for a number of years and following on the very successful Purple Teardrop campaign initiated by our Soroptimist Club in Poole, our members were anxious to use the Club as a vehicle to bring this major concern to the attention of the public in Newry. Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery and it is our duty as an international women’s organisation to highlight, not only the personal and psychological toll it takes on society, but also how the illegal movement of immigrants across borders provides a ready source of income for organized crime groups”.
