Irish speakers from Newry who attended the nation wide protest in Dublin at the weekend.

Dominic Bradley, SDLP Irish language spokesperson and MLA for Newry and Armagh said today that the unsurpassed attendance at Lá Mór na Gaeilge was an uplifting event for the Irish speaking community in this country and clearly show the two governments here the total disgust that Irish speakers fell about the down grading of the language in policy and funding terms.  Speaking in Dublin after the event the SDLP MLA said ‘I travel to Dublin with a group of Irish speakers from Newry and district and we felt truly uplifted by the huge crowd of people, upwards of 10,000 which turned out from all over Ireland and from every Gaeltacht to show their support for the language.  Today’s attendance illustrates clearly that Irish speakers are not prepared to stand for the marginalisation of the language whether it be  by reduced funding or half-hearted policies.

‘Irish is our national language and the brightest jewel of our heritage and we will not stand for its marginalisation, north or south.  I hope that today’s attendance is a wake-up call for the governments and that they now see that Irish speakers will not accept the downgrading of the language in any form whatsoever.

Bradley: ‘Tógáil Croí Dúinn Lá Mór na Gaeilge’

Tá ráite ag Dominic Bradley Ball Tionól an Tuaiscirt don Iúr agus d’Ard Mhacha  de chuid Pháirtí Daonlachach Sóisialta an Lucht Oibre gur tógáil croí do phobal na Gaeilge sa tír seo an méid daoine a tháinig amach ar shráideanna Bhaile Átha Cliath inniu chun a míshásaimh leis an dóigh a bhfuil  an dá rialtas thuaidh agus theas ag caitheamh leis an Ghaeilge. Dúirt Urlabhraí Gaeilge Pháirtí Daonlachach Sóisialta an Lucht Oibre agus é ag caint i mBaile Átha Cliath tar éis na hagóide ‘Thaistil me go Baile Átha Cliath le baicle de Ghaeil Oirghialla agus ba thógáil croí domsa agus dá lán dá raibh i láthair inniu suas le 10,000 duine a fheiceáil sa mhórshiúl ar Lá Mór na Gaeilge, daoine a tháinig as chúile chearn den tír agus as na Gaeltachtaí uilig.  Tá sé ríshoiléir ón tinmreamh a bhí ar agóid an lae inniu nach bhfuil pobal na Gaeilge sásta a thuilleadh glacadh leis an dóigh a bhfuiltear ag caitheamh leis an Ghaeilge sa tír seo faoi láthair.

‘Is í ár dteanga náisiúnta í an Ghaeilge agus an tseoid is luachmhara san oidhreacht againn agus ní ghlacfar a thuilleadh leis an bhrú chun imill atá á dhéanamh ag na rialtais thuaidh agus theas uirthi.  Tá súil agam gur gairm dhúisigh a bheas i Lá Mór na Gaeilge don dá rialtas agus go dtuigfidh siad nach gcuirfidh pobal na Gaeilge suas a tuilleadh le hiarrachtaí chun an Ghaeilge a dhíspeagadh ó thaobh maoinithe nó polasaí de.
