Our Black Bins are under scrutiny again and Newry and Mourne Council would like to encourage residents to recycle more using the blue and brown bins and reduce the amount heading straight to landfill.

Last year your efforts helped us to achieve an excellent recycling rate of 37%. However officers have noticed more recyclable material being thrown in to the black bin which is increasing the amount of waste we send to landfill.
Sending black bin waste to landfill cost the rate payer nearly £2 Million pounds in landfill tax last year. This means each household is handing over an estimated £3 every time their bin is collected. Could your money be better spent?
If everyone made an effort to reduce the amount of waste they throw away, landfill costs would be significantly reduced.
The Director of Technical Services and Leisure, Mr Jim McCorry said, ‘Dumping rubbish in a hole in the ground isn’t just bad for the environment, it threatens to hit the council taxpayer in the pocket unless we cut back.
It is great to see the effort residents are making to recycle every year however to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill we need to recycle as much as possible in the blue and brown bins’.
The following materials can go into your blue recycling bin and should not be put into your black bin:
Paper and cardboard (including newspapers and directories)
Plastic bottles
Plastic packaging (e.g. yogurt pots and margarine tubs)
Glass bottles and jars
Aerosols
Tins and cans (e.g. drinks cans and sweet/biscuit tins)
Tetra Pak (waxed cartons)
If any residents are unsure of what to recycle or would like the full list of what can be recycled in their blue or brown bin please contact our Recycling Officer on 028 3031 3220 or email recycling@newryandmourne.gov.uk
