The male was located in New Street at 225am with serious head injuries.
Police have arrested 3 people who remain in custody.

Condemning the incident Newry City Councillor Gavin Malone said " I am utterly shocked and heart broken to learn the details of the assault that took place here this morning which has left a man fighting for his life in hospital. I would like to condemn those responsible and thanks to the swift actions of the PSNI three have been arrested and are currently in custody. This is yet another event in a recent spate of violence and disorder in the city and worries me deeply"
