Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has welcomed recent figures showing an increase in bus and rail usage across the north while simultaneously criticising the Executive's lack of investment in public transport infrastructure.
The announcement comes following Translink's confirmation of an additional three million passenger journeys for 2024/25, bringing the total to 81.2 million passengers across their network.
Speaking on the figures, McNulty said: "It's great to see that more and more people are opting to use public transport, that's despite a lack of investment from the Executive. The fact that rail and bus journeys are on the rise, despite multiple fare increases and a fairly limited rail network, is proof of the public's desire to use more sustainable modes of transport."
Mr McNulty highlighted the disparity in public transport funding between Northern Ireland and other UK regions, noting: "Public spending per person on public transport in the North is the lowest among other UK jurisdictions; with just £193 per head spent in Northern Ireland compared to £465 in England and Scotland. While governments in other jurisdictions are driving investment towards public transport and passing on savings to passengers, the North continues to lag behind."
McNulty expressed particular concern about the Programme for Government's limited commitment to public transport development, arguing that increased investment would deliver multiple benefits beyond just infrastructure improvements.
"The Executive must recognise the tremendous opportunity in investing in public transport. This isn't just about infrastructure but improving the quality of life, lowering carbon emissions, enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth across the region. We need action now to harness the opportunities of future prosperity," he concluded.
The rising passenger numbers, despite funding constraints, suggest growing public appetite for sustainable transport options throughout Northern Ireland.
