Write a commentEmployees from MJM Marine in Newry have presented a cheque for a staggering £30,302 to local charity PIPS Hope and Support.
Employees chose PIPS Hope and Support as their Charity of the Year for 2018 and were involved in organising a number of events over the course of the year to raise money for the suicide prevention charity. The company committed to match the funds raised at the end of the year.
Speaking at the cheque presentation, Seamus McCabe, Chief Executive and Founder of PIPS Hope & Support, thanked MJM Marine and its employees. “I am absolutely blown away by what MJM Marine has given us. This is the single biggest donation that PIPS Hope & Support has ever received. I cannot begin to thank MJM Marine and their employees for their efforts and generosity in raising this phenomenal amount for us. This contribution will make such a difference to the services we offer in 2019.”
The money was raised through many events including a Spinathon in the Buttercrane Shopping Centre and a Save or Shave Challenge which saw one employee lose his hair and another lose his beard!
The donation comes at a time when calls are being made for more resources to be committed to suicide prevention in the Newry and Mourne area following the recent publication of statistics by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency. Tragically, over the past 10 years, the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council area has lost 260 people to suicide, an average of 26 people each year.

Our Charity of the Year plays a key role in our CSR activities. We are committed to supporting our local community but through our Social Charter Committee, we use our fund-raising initiatives to encourage employee engagement, motivation and teamwork which MJM Marine is very proud of.
