Newry and Armagh MLA Aoife Finnegan has raised concerns after the discovery of an Asian hornet nest in what is the first confirmed sighting of the species in the north. The highly invasive species poses a significant threat to insects, pollination and the livelihoods of beekeepers across the region.
The party's environment spokesperson welcomed the swift response by the Environment Agency, who are working with the National Biodiversity Data Centre in the south and drawing on their experience from similar incidents. Ms Finnegan said the discovery highlighted the need for closer cooperation on environmental issues.
"This is yet another example of the need for an all-Ireland approach to environmental protection, with ministers and agencies across the island working closely together," she said. "I would urge the public to report any suspected sightings or nests to the relevant authorities."
The MLA confirmed she will continue to engage with the department and the Environment Agency to ensure appropriate action is taken to address the threat posed by the invasive species.
