It was a productive day at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council's Planning Committee this morning with a number of large projects approved.
The application by Tinnely Construction Ltd is for a mixed use development including 1 retail unit and 9x 2 bedroom apartments at 46 Monaghan Street, the corner of Monaghan St and Patrick St.There will be on-site parking for 6 vehicles with secure roller shutter access, Dedicated bicycle parking and bin storage and Private external amenity space for each apartment.
The application was approved at the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Planning Meeting this morning 27 May via an 'Addendum List' proposed by Cllr Declan McAteer and seconded by Cllr Glyn Hanna.
A spokesperson for CD Architects said "The design takes a confident, contemporary approach while drawing on the best local traditions of form, materials and detailing. At four storeys, the building's ridge height is sympathetic to its neighbours along Monaghan Street, and its modern character responds positively to the varied and evolving streetscape of this central urban location."
The site has been vacant in recent years with its last use being an international food supermarket. Previously it had also been an Xtravision store and a garage.
The Planning Report stated: "It is considered that the proposed development respects the context of the area and has been designed to fit the corner site on a junction. The proposal looks to re-develop and rejuvenate the site with removal of a run-down unit to be replaced by a modern development that will be a focal point of the area at this location on the junction of two busy roads. The proposal will result in an overall improvement given the acceptable massing and appearance of the proposed apartment block."
