Write a commentA a commitment from Transport NI to extend double yellow lines on the east side of the Drumalane Road in Newry has been welcomed by local Councillor Valerie Harte and MP Mickey Brady.
Commenting on the move Cllr Harte said "I certainly welcome this commitment from the department which I hope will go some way to easing the parking problems that have plagued residents of this part of Newry for years.
"Myself and my colleagues, such as Mickey Brady, have been working with local residents for a number of years now to try and improve road safety in this part of the city.
"Thoughtless parking by motorists along what is an already narrow stretch of road is leaving it impossible for pedestrians to use the footpath, particularly if they are using prams, in wheelchairs or have other mobility problems.
"We have even seen cases where people have parked across driveways and residential access points. As well as being an absolutely thoughtless inconvenience this type of parking forces pedestrians onto the road.
"There are numerous parking issues in Newry but that is no excuse for punishing the residents of Drumalane. I'm glad to see the department is finally acting on this issue and would encourage them to extend the lines as soon as possible.
The lines will be extended by 73 metres on the east side of the road. Notices of Intention will begin next week with the actual lines put down in early 2016.
