A Newry woman who now lives in Hoboken, New Jersey, USA has just been honoured as the Hudson County “Irish Woman of the Year”
Cathy Nicholson (Gonnelly) formerly from Drumalane Park got the award at a ceremony at the Hudson County Courthouse.

The citation is bestowed on people who “Best exemplify the humanitarian and civic values embodied in the great traditions of Irish Heritage”
Hoboken has a population of around 50,000 and is in Hudson County, part of the New York Metropolitan Area.
It has quite a sizeable Irish population not only from Newry but Poyntzpass and further afield.

Hudson County council made the award in the run up to St Patrick’s Day and Cathy was selected for her involvement in local initiatives and as a person who has made a positive impact in her local community.
Commenting on the Award Cathy said “It is a great honour, I’m very humbled.”
The Newry ex pat works in one of the landmark Irish venues in Hoboken, The Shannon Bar.
Cathy has been invited to march in the Jersey City St Patrick’s Day Parade on the 15th of March.
