Councillor Roisin Mulgrew has praised the Bessbrook Community and Residents Association for the work they have done in organising this years Halloween Festival in the village as well as their hard work in bringing other projects to fruition.

"This group was elected by the residents after some anti-social behaviour problem arose and the community was feeling somewhat vulnerable," she said.

"The group have now worked with the McCabe family to hold a family fun day fundraiser in support of the Thumbs Up For Harvey appeal and following on from the fantastic feedback from that event, the association is putting the final touches to their Halloween Festival.

"They have organised scary story telling in the library, spooky walks in Derramore Wood, a horrifying movie in the Community Centre and a fireworks display at the pond.

"All these events are on Friday 30th October and on Saturday 31st they will finish with a disco and dance exhibition, again, in the community centre.

"The group is also delighted to launch a huge range of classes which are being supported by the council's successful bid for funds from the DSD Communities At Risk program. All the classes are held in the community centre and while there is a small fee, which will be reinvested in future events, they represent great value, the opportunity to learn something new and a chance to meet new people.

"Classes include jewellery making, flower arranging, fascinator making and ECDL computer courses. This is only the start, it is intended to offer Irish language classes and hockey training as well as much more later in the year.

"The first set of classes will start this week from 26th of October so anyone interested in the few remaining places can contact 07592844521 for details.

"I am delighted at the success of the group and praise their hard work , I know that they appreciate all of the assistance  that they have received from the council and would ask everyone to give them their full support."
