A new licenced Indian restaurant has opened in Newry this week.  Guru Indian Cuisine is an authentic Indian restaurant with a contemporary look and is based in Kildare Street.

A unique selling point is that as well as the usual Indian favourites, they're offering Indian food tapas style, something that is becoming a big thing in Dublin in this last year. Proprietor Guru Barrot is looking forward to welcoming people to the venue. His team includes Chef Banti Kumar, who has a vast experience in his field, having worked in the Oberoi hotel group and Restaurant Manager Shumaila Omer who managed a family restaurant in her home country of Pakistan.

It's something that perhaps has been missing in the city - An upmarket place where you can go to have cocktails, a nice selection of wines and tapas Indian style  on the side. Or alternatively you can have a meal with more traditional Indian dishes.

Guru seats around 70. The front of the restaurant suits the casual diner where you can have your wine or a couple of cocktails along with tapas. Then there's a dining room behind and you can also  book some areas for private parties. A beautiful window table commands a great view of Sugar Island and the iconic Newry Town Hall.

Speaking about the new restaurant Dublin Food Writer Paul O'Connor said "It's a fabulous restaurant, Guru knows what he's doing. He's got a great team behind him, great chefs, large front of house team who are very friendly and helpful. Last night at the opening they had 200 + people here and they were under pressure to deliver and they delivered very very well."

O'Connor added "The chef is excellent, I tasted his food last night. I'm the head of the Asian Restaurant Awards in all of Ireland. I'm eating in Indian restaurants and other Asian restaurants a lot of the time. To serve for 200 plus people was not easy, they did extremely well. It's a great addition to Newry It's going to be the best Indian restaurant in Newry and surrounds in my opinion. It's worth traveling to, its a destination restaurant, rather than even just a local restaurant."

Guru will be open 7 days a week: Monday to Thursday 5-11pm and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12.30pm to 11.30pm.

They also do takeaways.
