A relatively new type of pedestrian crossing is being installed at Main Street in Hilltown by the Department for Infrastructure.

Work on the Puffin controlled pedestrian crossing along with some carriageway resurfacing has already commenced.

The new controlled Puffin crossing will improve road safety for pedestrians, in particular vulnerable road users such as children, the elderly and those with a disability and is due to be completed by the end of February.

Traffic management will be in place to ensure the works are carried out safely and road users are urged to take extra care.

Puffin crossings are relatively new locally. They have the Red/ Green Man signals on the same side of the road as you are waiting to cross, allowing you to watch these signals and traffic at the same time.

Puffin crossings have sensors that can spot if you are waiting to cross.Other sensors can spot if you are already crossing the road. Drivers waiting at the Puffin crossing will only be allowed to continue once you have finished crossing the road.
