Newry has Best Ever St Patrick's Day Parade

Thousands of visitors made Newry the place to be for St Patrick’s Day with the parade attracting the largest attendance ever. Indeed it was one of the most inventive and varied parades ever with the new Newry Canal walkway being a favourite location to watch the action.

Visitors came from far and near with a group from Kirovsk in Russia 

probably winning the award for the most travelled, continuing the history of exchange visits between Newry and Kirovsk.

The parade was led by a very sprightly St Patrick and Newry’s first citizen Cllr Daire Hughes as well as Mini Miss European NI followed by the Kirovsk group. Marching Bands, Taekwondo practitioners, Autism Mums, vintage tractors, fire breathers, community groups, GAA clubs and many more.

The standard and quality of floats has certainly improved incredibly in recent years.

Marcus Square and Hill Street were thronged with visitors throughout the day with a top notch concert in Marcus Square as well as many events in Newry Market.

The PSNI reported a pretty quiet St Patrick’s day with their neighbourhood policing teams cycle patrols in full flow around the City.

Full credit must go to Newry and Mourne District Council who organised the event along with all the participants who made it what it was, an incredibly colourful fun day for everyone.
