Newry High School presented a wonderful night of music and scripture readings last evening, 16 December, at the beautiful St Patrick's Church in Newry. The pews were packed for the magical Carols by Candlelight with old favourites including Joy to the World, Deck the Halls, In the Bleak Mid Winter and the ever beautiful O Holy Night sang and played by the pupils with bagpipes, flutes and drums all used in their repertoire. Rector of St Patrick's and St Mary's Revd Capt Scott McDonald concluded with a blessing.
The church situated on a hill overlooking the city is believed to be the location of the first Protestant church in Ireland, with a place of worship reputedly built there in 1578. The present Church of Ireland building was built in 1866.
