Over 860 people with Newry connections enlisted in the early years of World War One. It was suggested that Newry had the highest enlistment rate of any town in Ireland.

Tonight hundreds of Newry people gathered at Newry Town Hall to remember them and mark the commencement of the United Kingdom’s entry into World War One exactly a hundred years ago today with members of the Hunter Moore Memorial Band and a lone piper taking part.

Newry Museum continues with it’s exhibition entitled Local Impacts of the First World War including Newry’s Roll of Honour.
