A vigil is being held in Newry tomorrow evening 19 December in memory of murdered Banbridge nurse Karen Cummings. Ms Cummings, a well loved Paediatric Nurse at Daisy Hill Hospital lost her life on Saturday night, 14 December. She was the seventh woman to be murdered in Northern Ireland this year.
The vigil is being organised by Newry City Councillor Doire Finn and will take place at 6pm in Marcus Square, Hill Street, Thursday 19 December and all are invited to go along and show support and express their horror at another senseless murder of a woman.
Cllr Finn explains "Karen Cummings dedicated her life to the care of others. As a paediatric nurse, Karen was admired, respected, and held in the highest esteem by colleagues and patients alike.
"There are no words that can articulate the shock, the horror, and the anger being felt by Karen’s children, family and friends. My heart is broken for her two young children, Curtis and Zara, who have had their mummy stolen from them in the mouth of Christmas."
The Newry Councillor added "Karen is the 25th woman murdered in NI since 2020, and the seventh woman this year. It is an outrage that our justice system is failing to protect women and girls from violent offenders. This cannot go on."
Two men appeared by video link at Newry Courthouse today charged with her murder. A 32-year-old man is charged with murder and a 42-year-old-man is charged with murder, firearms-related offences and handling stolen goods.
Ms Cummings was found unconscious in the Laurel Heights area of Banbridge on Saturday evening, 14 December and was pronounced deceased a short time later.
