In times past Newry Canal would have seen many tall ships sailing through the town delivering and collecting merchandise and people and thanks to Gerry Brennan from Silvery Light Sailing the oars have been set in motion for Newry city to have it's very own tall ship, based right here, with restoration work beginning in just over two months time!

The covered hull of the ship can be seen at the Albert Basin, just across from the Quays Shopping centre where it has been based since July 2015 after being hoisted into place by crane.

Silvery Light Sailing, a Newry based Not for Profit Community Enterprise is restoring one of the last examples of a wooden sailing Tall Ship that was once a common sight in local ports and harbours.

Work to restore the 1884 built, Silvery Light will begin in April 2017 at the Albert Basin in Newry and will involve local volunteers under the supervision of professional shipwrights.

When restoration is complete, Silvery Light Sailing, the owners of the ship, will undertake a regular  programme of  sailing trips open to the public, schools, youth and community groups.

When not at sea, Silvery Light will be the centrepiece for Tourism and  Maritime Heritage of the  Quays at the Historic  Albert Basin as  Newry’s own Tall Ship

If you would like to get involved in the project Silvery Light Sailing are hosting an Open Public Meeting at Ballybot House on Monday 27 February at 7pm where you can hear much more about the project.

Silvery Light Sailing cordially invite members of the public, youth and community groups, potential volunteers, sailors and all interested parties to learn more  about the project and how they may become involved.

See www.silverylight.org for additional background to the project.
