Mayor Mickey Ruane with some of the Oktoberfest girls. This years Oktoberfest may just be the first ever night on the beer, when people don't go home with a sore head but go home with sore feet instead!

With beerly two weeks to go to Newry's very own Oktoberfest organisers are looking forward to entertaining over 5000 guests in their 500 seated capacity beer tent at McClelland Park. This year energetic types have the choice of running for their beer, with a 5K Run as part of the package!

Newry’s Creamery Quarter will say hello or Guten Tag to Oktoberfest which takes place from Thursday 3rd of October to Sunday the 6th.

The beer festival is in its second year after last years hugely successful event. It is the brainchild of organiser Graeme Finegan, of Grounded fame and was dreamt up as part of his desire to make Newry City Centre something to be proud off.

As Graeme commented “Newry is a great place, we know how to have a laugh and enjoy ourselves, last year really showed us that there is an appetite for something a wee tiny bit different. The feedback form the patrons have spurred us on to make this years fest even better and even bigger.”

Oktoberfest is one of the most famous events in Germany and is the worlds biggest fair. It has been running since 1810 and has spread throughout the world. This years Oktoberfest will be filled once again with exceptional local talent in the form of live bands; Cold Porter, Hair O’the Dawg, Taxi, dancing from the Burlesque Belles and the truly amazing St Catherine’s Band and SoundFunction DJs.

All ready for Oktoberfest 2013.Continuing Graeme added “The entertainment was great last year and I really cant wait for St Catherine’s Band performance this year, a real highlight for me, the guys have been learning ‘ompah’ tunes for some time now, so they are sure to give us plenty of tunes to swing our litres of beer "

As well as tunes to swing your steins to, expect fun games, dancing on tables and an atmosphere which is akin to that of Bavaria.

The Festival has its very own 5km Run this year which takes place on Thursday at 7pm. There are over 100 runners already taking part. For those who want to run for a complimentary Erdinger Hefe or AlcoFrei and off course the limited edition Newry Oktoberfest bespoke medal, a registration evening will take place in Grounded on Monday Night at 7pm.

The festival is a free event, to encourage people to sample the atmosphere and products on sale, grab a bratwurst sausage, a litre of beer and listen to some great music.
