A petition has been launched on Change.org calling for support for the police officer involved in celebrating the win of Armagh in the All Ireland Final. A video has been widely circulated on social media showing a police vehicle with a flag flying from the drivers window while police sirens could be heard. Some political figures have condemned the celebrations and the PSNI have said they are investigating the incident.
Armagh GAA won the All-Ireland SFC on Sunday for the first time since 2002.
The petitions says "The community of Camlough and wider South Armagh were out in jublient scenes to celebrate the success when they were joined by their local community and neighbourhood policing team in celebration.
"Since then, the police officer in question has been subject to political bigotry from the TUV, DUP and UUP parties, clearly opposed to normalised policing within nationalist and republican communities and anything that has association with the GAA."
The petition concludes "We ask you sign this petition to send a clear message to the PSNI Chief Constable and the Police Ombudsmen that all officers concerned in this alleged event are vindicated for their actions and immediately returned to front line duties without punishment. Furthermore, they should be commended for their courageous policing efforts in South Armagh and for their dedication to keeping all the people of the north of Ireland safe."
