Write a commentRegional Development Minister Michelle McIlveen was on a visit to Newry last week to see for herself the need for traffic calming measures on some roads in the city.
The visit was arranged after MLA Karen McKevitt raised the need for traffic calming measures to be introduced on roads across the city.
Mrs McKevitt said “I have called on Transport NI (formerly Roads Service) to bring forward plans to make roads and junctions across the city safer for many years now but no action has been taken.
“It was time for the Minister to see first-hand the dangers presented to drivers, pedestrians, residents and cyclists who use the Old Warrenpoint Road, Crieve Road, Ballyholland Road and Temple Hill road.
“I pressed upon the Minister the importance of introducing traffic calming measures, junction improvement and footpath schemes in these areas and I have received a commitment from her office that further assessments will be carried out over the next coming weeks.
“I wish to remind drivers to exercise caution along these routes and obey the speed restrictions already in place.”
