Repair works are set to be carried out on Dominic Street in Newry following sustained lobbying by Newry City Councillor Killian Feehan over the condition of the road surface. Cllr Feehan has received confirmation from the Department for Infrastructure Roads that the street has been added to its scheduled works programme, with work expected to begin within the next few weeks.

Back in June Cllr Feehan had raised serious safety concerns about the state of the road, particularly outside the Dominican Chapel, and the risk it posed to the public.

"I have been pushing hard for action on Dominic Street because the condition of the road surface has become completely unacceptable," Cllr Feehan said. "The situation outside the Dominican was particularly concerning. This is a very busy part of Newry, with huge numbers of pedestrians using the area, including many elderly people making their way to Mass. The diabolical condition of the road surface was a real danger to them."

He added: "I raised this directly with DfI Roads and continued to press for action, particularly given the clear safety concerns and the level of public use. I am pleased that DfI Roads has now confirmed that Dominic Street has been added to its scheduled works programme, with repairs expected to commence within the next few weeks."

Cllr Feehan added "This is a positive outcome following sustained lobbying, but I will continue to keep the pressure on to ensure these works are delivered without unnecessary delay," he said. "Local people deserve roads that are safe for everyone, whether they are driving, walking or making their way to and from Mass and community facilities."
