Write a commentSixteen Rural Play Parks from throughout Newry, Mourne and Down Council area are set to be upgraded following announcement of a £1M funding package at a function at Slieve Gullion playpark.
The project is co-funded by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and the Mourne, Gullion and Lecale Rural Development Programme.
The Play Parks programme is funded by £500,000 from Priority 6 of the Rural Development Fund which will be matched by £500,000 from the Council’s Active and Healthy Communities budget. The locations of the play parks that will benefit have still to be announced.
Cllr Murnin, Chairman, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council commented on the announcement “The cash injection is a direct result of a strategic approach developed from the Council’s Play Strategy in conjunction with the recently developed Village Plans for the district, which were also funded through the Rural Development Programme.”
Cllr Mulgrew, Chairperson, Mourne, Gullion and Lecale Rural Development Partnership added, “ I am delighted to see projects which were identified by local people through the Village Plans working their way through to fruition especially those which will contribute positively to the health and wellbeing of our children and young people.”
Jerome Burns, of the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) also spoke of his delight at the project and the positive impact it will have on children and young people.
