Southern Regional College award winning students were recently invited to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council chambers to meet Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick, Chairperson of the Council, in recognition of the students’ national successes at the UK Skills competitions.
Jordan Jeffers, Richard Shannon, Gavin Rice, Kieran Magee and Armondus Tamulis were delighted to meet Councillor Fitzpatrick having all demonstrated outstanding skills and expertise at competition level in areas such as Painting and Decorating, Cabinet Making, Plumbing Pipework and Wall and Floor Tiling. A further UK Skills award winner in Cabinet Making, Christopher Jeffrey, was unable to attend on the day.
In welcoming her guests, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “One of the Council’s objectives is to attract investment and support the creation of new jobs. By developing the potential of young people, such as the award winners I am honouring today, collectively we can enhance and empower our local communities and maximise the potential of our wonderful district.
I am proud of you and am confident you will go far in your chosen careers and have many successes in the future. You are wonderful ambassadors for the Newry, Mourne and Down District and first class role models for other students in the College.”
Staff from Southern Regional College were also in attendance at this event to celebrate in the success of the students. Mr Raymond Sloan, Director of Client Services at SRC said: “I would like to thank the Chairperson and Council staff for your commitment to both the work of the College and successes of our students. These students present today have done both themselves, the College and the southern region very proud, achieving medals in UK Skills competitions and now competing for selection to go forward and take part in Worldskills in Abu Dhabi 2017. These trainees are all hoping to emulate the College’s Worldskills Plumbing Gold Medal Winner, Gary Doyle, and we wish them well in future competitions. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated and committed staff who mentor and guide our students to be the best they can be. We at SRC firmly believe in the benefits of our students taking part in skills competitions like these as they allow them to fine tune their skills, producing the most talented and highly capable trainees possible.”
