Louth TD Erin McGreehan has spoken out after the Carlingford Lough Ferry service that runs between Greencastle and Greenore, was suspended last week.
McGreehan said she is "deeply disappointed" the ferry will not run this year, but added that she remains committed to securing its long-term future. The Carlingford Lough Ferry has operated since 2017, supporting tourism, local businesses and community connectivity between counties Louth and Down.
Frazer Ferries that ran the service announced that the service will not operate in 2026 and that tickets with outstanding trips valid for travel this year will have their expiry date extended "so they can be used when the ferry is back in service."
The Louth TD has been in discussion with Louth County Council, the Shared Island Unit and Minister Peter Burke on a PSO-style proposal. The proposal would recognise the ferry as essential tourism and economic infrastructure for the Carlingford Lough region.
McGreehan said she remains "committed to securing a sustainable long-term future for this vital cross-border route."
