Local Police have offered some steps to help you reduce the risk of your house or outbuildings being targeted by burglars.

To beat the burglar you have to think like the burglar. How would you get in?

Take a step back and look at your home starting from the outside.

Does your home look secure or is it an easy target?

Can a burglar easily work at opening windows and doors unseen?

Are your high hedges giving a burglar hiding spots? – Reduce planting to allow clear sight of your property.

Poor lighting?  - The burglar doesn’t want to be seen so light them up! Consider installing security lighting.

Burglars will look to see if there is an alarm installed. They want an easy target and will generally stay away from alarmed properties. But remember you need to activate the alarm for it to work, even at night time! Set the zones and protect your home whilst you sleep. After all why spend all that money installing an alarm and not use it. Forget about dummy systems the burglar has probably seen them too! This includes dummy CCTV.

Keen gardener?

Make sure you securely store away all your tools in a locked shed or garage - Don’t provide the burglar with the means to break in!

Lock windows and doors even when you're at home. Need some ventilation? Install window restrictors and use when in the house. No one wants an uninvited guest!

Most of us upgrade our mobile phones on a regular basis but have you ever considered upgrading your locks? Improve security and make it harder for the burglar by installing upgraded door and window locks. Contact a reputable locksmith for recommendations and advice.

Put valuables out of sight, burglars like to window shop!

Going away?

Cancel deliveries and ask someone to lift post off the mat.

Don’t advertise you're going away! We all love to tell our Facebook friends how lucky we are heading off to the sun but just remember it's not too hard to get your address! Post your pictures etc. once you return!

Remember most burglaries are opportunistic, so don’t give make it easy for them to burglar your home -  Your home is your castle protect it!
