Write a commentFollowing a number of creeper style burglaries in the area Police in Newry and Mourne are reminding the public to take steps to discourage burglars from targeting their home.
Crime Prevention Officer Lisa Sherman said: “Over recent weeks a number of vehicles have been stolen as a result of creeper burglaries. In a recent incident in The Valley, Mullaghbawn, on Thursday, 5 November, the rear door lock was snapped and thieves entered the house where they stole car keys. A red Audi A4 was subsequently taken.
“We want to help reduce your chance of becoming a victim of this type of crime. Burglars will always choose the easy option so the more difficult you can make it for them to gain access to your house, the better!
“Take a look at your home to see if it is possible for burglars to approach it or try to gain access unseen. If there are high hedges or other shrubbery which provides a hiding spot for a burglar, then reduce planting to allow clear sight of your property. Would burglars be able to work unnoticed at opening your windows or doors? Consider installing window restrictors such as upgraded anti snap/bump door and window locks. Contact a reputable locksmith for recommendations and advice.
“Burglars do not like well lit spaces so external security lighting can make all the difference.
“Burglars will also look to see if there is an alarm installed. They want an easy target and will generally stay away from alarmed properties. But remember you need to activate the alarm for it to work, even at night time! Set the zones and protect your home whilst you sleep. After all why spend all that money installing an alarm and not use it. Forget about dummy systems the burglar has probably seen them too! This includes dummy CCTV.
