The saga of the smell coming from Warrenpoint Port continues. ReGen Waste had been storing Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) in bales on site, pre shipment. Residents of the town say the stink continues despite Warrenpoint Harbour Authority claiming that ReGen have now removed all of their RDF from site and would be transporting it directly to ships instead.
Despite a raft of comments to the contrary from members of the public to Newry.ie, Warrenpoint Harbour have once again today, 18 September stated to Newry.ie that all bales of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) have been removed from the port and that only Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) remains. SRF is supposed to be 'non odorous'.
We also today asked ReGen to confirm that all RDF waste has been removed from the ground at Warrenpoint Port but they didn't answer, instead saying "At this moment, we have no further information to add".
In a report yesterday aerial footage from ITV showed a substantial amount of bales on site but it is impossible to tell from footage if these are RDF or the supposed non odorous SRF, but regardless the smell issue continues. ITV also state that they contacted ReGen without success.
Layers of complicity
Community group Rostrevor Action Respecting the Environment are asking WHA to apologise for what they claim are 'inaccurate statements'
On their Facebook page they say "The stench story that has emanated from the "critical cogs" waste partnership of Warrenpoint Harbour Authority and Re-Gen sees yet more layers of complicity revealed through yesterday's news report as community pressure from the ground and footage from the sky continues to speak truth to power.
"We have taken time to consider the statements coming from the now faceless WHA and the silence from the now voiceless Re-Gen and we hope that readers will take time to consider the consequences of those piles of waste that remain in Warrenpoint Port, as shown in this exclusive news report."
The post continues "WHA spokespersons must now prepare themselves to make formal apologies for misleading the media, elected representatives and the public with inaccurate statements such as "Re-Gen have now removed all RDF from the Port", "Only Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is now being stored on site", "the removal of REF is a welcome development" and more."
