The second annual Youth and Future Talent Awards (YAFTA's) were held recently in Newry City. The event was organised by Newry & Mourne Youth Council in Partnership with Newry and Mourne District Council and the SELB Youth Service.

These awards recognise the positive contribution that young people make within their homes, commmunities and across the district.

There are 6 categories awarded including, Good Relations Award, Community Safety Award, Young Carer Award, Inspirational Young Person Award, Innovation and Creativity Award and Voice of Young People Award. Nominations came from across the district and standards of entries were extremely high making it a difficult decision to make. All nominees deserve recognition for their efforts and huge congratulations to all the Winners and Runners Up.

The event was attended by Mayor Daire Hughes who said “It is often mooted, often glibly, that young people are the leaders of tomorrow. Newry and Mourne Youth Council, those nominated here tonight and our eventual winners, stand as evidence that young people in our district are the leaders of today”.

The awards were supported by Newry and Mourne District Councils (Equality Unit, Good Relation Unit, and Policing and Community Safety Partnership), Bayview Contracts, La Dolce Vita and Newry and Mourne Area Learning Community.
