Artist Oliver Madden is holding an exhibition taking up both galleries in the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre for the month of October.
The Bell Gallery will host “Selected Works”, a collection of stunning landscapes, seascapes and portraits, and The Carroll Gallery hosts “Other than Here”, a collection of more contemporary abstract pieces
Oliver’s work is based on the actuality of colour and material. Oliver States “Abstract Expressionism’s interest in the continuation of the Romantic tradition of the sublime, reached its end/pinnacle in Rothko’s Chapel. My process-orientated painting practice, although highly influenced by the work of the Abstract expressionists, negates any attempt on searching for the sublime, instead, explores the essence of painting, through focusing on and presenting the actuality of colour and material. The intended experience of the work by the viewer, should be embedded in the concrete reality of the painting itself, its gestalt.”.
In “Selected Works” portraits include Nelson Mandela, Seamus Heaney, and Clarence Clemins, and other works include “Rain”, “The Quays” and “Blue Fishing Boat”. The works are skilfully executed, using a vibrant palette, which will delight the viewer.
Oliver was born in Northern Ireland in 1956. He is a Newry-based artist, whose work is wholly invested in painting. Madden’s process-orientated practice, although strongly influenced by abstract expressionism, negates any attempt on searching for the sublime, instead, explores the essence of painting, through focusing on and presenting the actuality of colour and material.
Madden has exhibited his work in various galleries throughout Northern Ireland and is included in private collections throughout Ireland, the United Kingdom, New York and Montana.
