A new installation of public art is on it’s way to Newry as part of the Newry Merchant’s City project.
While consultation with the artist at a public meeting in the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre didn’t attract a large number of people, the visitors who did make it had plenty to contribute.
The Sculpture that will grace the banks of Newry Canal has been commissioned by Artist Chris Wilson and is shaped like a wave. The shape is designed to reflect the idea of water and trade as a dynamic flowing movement.
While one side concentrates on illustrations of everyday items from barrels to work tools to laptops and hints at the importance of the printing industry in Newry, the other highlights the historical connections and trade routes between Newry and other parts of the world.
The top of the Sculpture contains illustrations of various iconic Newry buildings.
The artist has had many Sculptures Commissioned from around Ireland including Jordanstown, Tollymore, Toomebridge, Ardglass and he also was responsible for the well known Global Journeys stainless steel globe sculpture in Newcastle.
