Tonight in Newry Town Hall Newpoint Players present Homecoming, a celebration of the talent that has went forth from Newry thanks to Newpoint Players to all arts and parts of the world.
Since its formation in 1946 Newpoint Players has fed a continuous stream of people into the professional theatre, large and small screen. The roles are varied, from Theatre Director to Set Designer, Lighting Director to Journalist and, of course, Actors.
They never forget where they came from and many are there because of the inspiration of Sean Hollywood. This evening Wednesday 8 February 2023, some of Newpoint’s illustrious members come home for a soirée of tales, scandal, dramatic readings and maybe even a song.
Featuring stage and screen star Sean Kearns whose accolades include TV shows Vera, As the Beast Sleeps, Ballykissangel and films such as Puckoon, Best, Angela's Ashes, Durango and The Boxer to name a few. Sean has had an amazing stage career and has appeared in countless productions across Ireland and the UK including his West End productions of Wicked, The Commitments and Billy Elliot. He has a penchant for a nice frock as evidenced by his extensive record of playing pantomime dames.
Caolan Byrne has been a film, TV and stage actor since his schooldays and is even now finding new heights to ascend to. His most recent performance has been as the father in the Netflix blockbuster The Wonder with Florence Pugh. Locally, he came home to direct the Newpoint Youth Group production of Under Milk Wood last summer. In another direction he will be heading to Montreal days after this event to act in a major video game production. You may also have seen him in Chernobyl last year.
Any interview is only as good as the person asking the questions and, yet again, from Newpoint has emanated one of Ireland’s finest. Dearbhail McDonald is an award winning journalist, author and broadcaster who has won numerous lighting awards for Newpoint Players for Beckett's Waiting for Godot, a play with four lighting cues. That, and being thrust onto the stage last minute at the Parochial Hall to substitute for Pauline Lynch, led the HIGHLY talented McDonald to leave drama for another calling. A global Eisenhower Fellow, the former Group Business and Legal Editor of Independent News And Media is the recipient of the 2021 Outstanding Achievement Award from the UCD Smurfit School Business Journalist Awards, a DCU Alumni Special Achievement Award as well The Mary Cummins Award for Outstanding Achievement of Women in Media.
Join one of Newry’s and Ireland's top drama groups in Newry Town Hall for an event not to be missed. A group 76 years young and still throwing a party!
