Newry's Fews ensemble to play rare WWII composition in Carlingford

Carlingford Heritage Centre is to host the Newry-based Fews Ensemble later this month for a concert of music composed in a prisoner of war camp in 1941 by French composer Olivier Messiaen. The performance of Quartet for the End of Time will take place on Sunday 27 September at 2pm.

Fews Ensemble leader and violinist Joanne Quigley McParland said the piece stands as one of the defining musical statements of the 20th century. "Despite its theme, the music is an uplifting and extraordinary meditation on eternity and transformation. Its unique sonorities and spiritual depth find luminous expression in the intimate setting of Carlingford Heritage Centre, originally a medieval church," Quigley McParland said.

The performing quartet includes internationally renowned musicians David Quigley on piano, his sister Joanne on violin, Francesco Paola Scola on clarinet and Jonathan Aasgaard on cello.

The concert is the second in the Fews Ensemble's series of residency performances in Carlingford, and organisers describe it as a rare moment where music and environment meet in harmony.
