Write a commentPolice are appealing for information after damage was caused to the memorial to 18 soldiers killed by the IRA in August 1979 at Narrow Water in Warrenpoint.
Police received a report shortly before 10 this morning that floral tributes at the memorial had been destroyed.
Sgt Amanda Ford said: "Officers are currently investigating this report and part of our enquiries will be to establish if there is any hate motivation behind this incident.
"I would appeal to anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the vicinity recently, or anyone who may have information that could assist in our enquiries, to contact police on 101 quoting reference 329 of 19th July.
"Alternatively, information can be given anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
