 01 Meán Fómhair 2013

Thomas Davis Under 16’s qualified for the final of the Under 16 Shield with a comprehensive win over Ballymacnab last Sunday morning at Craobh Rua Hurling field. We started very well with points  from play from Lee Courtney & Conor Jennings before the visitors registered their first score. Playing  with the wind advantage in the first half, we began to make full use of it with good ball in to corner forwards Caolan Marron & Declan Loye who were causing havoc for their respective markers hitting a goal each leaving us 2-04 to 0-02 ahead on the 15 minute mark. Ballymacnab pushed hard for equalising scores but great defensive work from Shane Keenan, Aaron Cinnamond & Dean Faloon always kept the visitors shooting from distance or creating turnovers to put good quick ball in our forward line. Up front we were proving hard to handle with some great support play which allowed further goals from Declan Loye & Conor Rice as we finished out the half strongly leaving it 5-09 to 0-06 in our favour.

On the restart we upped the ante once again with points from Conor Jennings & Jordan Mackey to make sure the Ballymacnab comeback wasn’t on the cards. The visitors played route one using the elements to their advantage but time and again our fullback line was solid with Brendan McCorry & Dean Faloon first to the ball every time clearing their lines. Further scores from Declan Loye & Caolan Marron ensured we were heading to the final but fullmarks to Ballymacnab as they battled to the end and were awarded a penalty which after the initial save was rebounded to the net. The introduction of Matthew Loughran & Jonny Tumility brought freshness into our play which Ballymacnab had no answer allowing us to seal out the game with a Jordan Mackey goal. Next up is Grange in the league.

Tomás Dáibhis 4-18     Baile Ó hAgáin 1-12

Thomas Davis Under 16’s picked another 2 league points in their All County league campaign with a good win over Ballyhegan last Thursday night at St.Pauls school pitch. Both sides started very well with some excellent scores from play and on the 10 minute mark there was little between the sides with the score 0-03 to 0-02 in our favour. A few positional changes were made and our lads began to play more attacking football with some excellent ball being played to corner forwards Caolan Marron & Conor Jennings who were showing well and hit some great scores from play and earned numerous frees that put us in a more commanding position. At midfield we were getting the better of the exchanges with Declan Loye, Keyonis Crozier & Lee Courtney all adding to our tally as we enjoyed a 3-10 to 0-04 halftime lead.

On the restart the visitors really put it up to us as they tried hard to get back into the game and really were unlucky as 1 goalbound shot rebounded of the crossbar & a second was well saved by keeper Ronan McMahon. Both sides traded points throughout the half and a fourth goal from Lee Courtney more or less sealed the victory. A hard earned victory with some great performances throughout the team that really kept Ballyhegan second to the ball for long periods. In defence Shane Keenan, Breandáin McCorry & Aaron Cinnamond were superb showing great battling qualities. Declan Loye & Lee Courtney were once again to the fore and up front Caolan Marron, Keyonis Crozier & Conor Jennings all did well. Next game is Sunday 01 September, 12am against Ballymacnab at Craobh Rua in the semi-final of the Shield.

Training continues every Sunday Morning at 10.45am at the Club Grounds. New members welcome. Contact Anthony Havern 07805853032

Under 18 Football / Peil Faoi 18

MATCH REPORT

The minors travelled away to Lurgan to face St Pauls in the 1/4 final of the championship. Having already played St Pauls at home and won expectations were high. The home side started the quicker with two quick points as the boys started very nervous. It wasn't until the twelfth minute that a run from Conor Loye and a long pass to brother Decky resulted in the green flag being raised. The two sides exchanged points throughout the first half with some fine points coming from the boot of Phelim Finnegan and Charlie Magill. A defensive error resulted in St Pauls being awarded a penalty with the ball being dispatched high into the back of the net from the resulting kick to bring the sides level. The game ebbed and flowed and the minors raised the green flag once again with a well worked goal from Charlie Magill. St Pauls kept taking their points and the final score of the first half came from the boot of midfielder Conor Loye to leave the boys leading 2-4 1-5.    Having played better all season than they showed in the first half the team took to the field with theirs managers halftime team talk ringing in their ears. The first ten minutes into the second half two quick goals from Sean Thompson and Ryan McSherry put the team in control and at this stage it looked like the game could be over. As the old saying goes its never over until the final whistle and this was to be proved right, St Pauls to their credit kept plugging away and some wasteful possession was giving St Pauls new found belief to claw their way back into the game with two quick goals. With the minors one point ahead with two mins injury time played a long high ball was kicked into the square and the ball somehow ended up in the back of the net, with no time left on the clock the boys tried everything and nearly snatched the game back with the last kick of the game going over the bar to leave the minimum between the teams at the end.

4-8 4-7.  Although bitterly disappointed at the end this minor team can hold their heads high playing some attractive football all year.
